Blooming! - Opportunity Knocks... When meeting Marion Marshall, owner of Absolutely Blooming, an African-American floral shop owner (located in retail area of South Side on Lamar), you immediately get the feeling that she is well on her way to being a household name. "Absolutely Blooming! floral boutique is an opportunity," Ms. Marshall says. Artist, Vicki Meek, Dale Moses, friends Marilyn Sullivan, Terry Inman and many other designed the space. Marion Marshall says that when she received a call from the leasing agents at South Side on Lamar she jumped at the idea, "I received a call on the second Monday in May, 2003; the leasing agents asked if I was interested in opening a florist. John Heard who is my partner, who like me knew nothing about starting a flower business, decided to take the chance. We said yes." She says that the next few months were awkward but she was able to get the necessary backing and materials to open the shop, "The next few months were a blur. On December 6, 2003, Absolutely Blooming! opened." As a resident as South Side on Lamar, Ms. Marshall adds that the small inner city (housed in a building) is a diverse community in Dallas. "The population looks like the United Nations. The vibe as we say at South Side is what drives my creative juices to create some of he most amazing floral sculptures." Marshall states that there is no formula for creating uxorious looking flowers, "There is no recipe for the floral sculptures. The abundant presence of greenery adds to the beauty of the unusual vases -- like light fixtures. In addition to being a florist, Marion Marshall's background began in fashion design. "I am a fashion designer first," she says. She brings fashion in to her flower arrangements. "I bring my background as an apparel designer, which also allows me to see the flowers the fabric and greenery as notions. I see creating floral sculptures like I see designing clothing. It is about color, texture and accessories," she states. Absolutely Blooming! Their service includes small or grand events, weddings, corporate, gift items or just because. "We have gift programs which allows you to purchase and send flowers monthly on a 2,3,6, or 12 month program; we are also home of B.Y.O.C. (BRING YOUR OWN CONTAINER). Most people have a container that they like and this allows them to purchase more flowers. She also says that she loves doing this job because she gets to meet so many different people. "I enjoy the residents and visitors.. What I love more is listening and knowing that they enjoy the sculptures." Her advice to the people who want to get in business... "Seize the opportunity, work hard, and be fearless. Ms. Marshall goes on to say about here career, "I have so much to learn and more sculptures to create.
